AT Protocol server / experiment

Pirs

A personal data server you can extend.

Pirs is a fork of the Bluesky personal data server with hook points for plugins: a draft specification, a status endpoint and a smoke test that boots a throwaway server. The plugin host is planned to run in a separate process that never receives signing keys. It is not production software and no plugin runs yet.

For operators of a personal data server who want to extend it without patching the upstream.

WHAT YOU CAN DO

Hook points for a server that has none.

01

A draft specification

Hook points at four levels: observe, serve, act and decide. The spec is a working draft, and nothing in it is stable.

02

A bridge and a smoke test

A status endpoint counts sequencer events. The smoke test boots a throwaway server and checks that an event arrives.

03

A plugin host, planned

Plugins are meant to run in a separate wasmtime process that never receives signing keys. The host does not exist yet.

WHERE IT STANDS

An experiment

  1. A fork of the Bluesky PDS

Pirs tracks the upstream distribution and adds its pieces on top, under the same MIT and Apache-2.0 terms.

  2. Not production software

No plugin runs yet, and no milestone beyond the scaffold has started. Prichal, our managed hosting, stays on the unmodified upstream image.

A FEW DETAILS

Common questions

Is this what Prichal runs?

No. Prichal runs the upstream server as published. Pirs is where the extension idea is worked out.

Can I try it?

Clone it and run the smoke test with Node 22 and pnpm. That is the whole demonstration today.

MADE IN THE OPEN

Pirs is made by SUBCULT.

Patreon pays for the hours and the hosting. Paid members get private channels in our Discord and supporter posts, which show up when we have something to share. The monthly newsletter is free.
